Gudi Padwa

Falls on the first day of Chaitra Month (March) as per the Maharashtrian calendar. On this day the Marathi speaking people tie a colorful silk cloth on top of a small stick and cover it with neem and mango leafs along with a garland of flowers. On top of it is a bronze or a silver pot, this is then hoisted like a lamp and kept outside the windows so that it is visible to everyone. The Marathi speaking also celebrate it by carrying out processions and the women folk dress in their traditional sarees and ride the heaviest of bikes.
